What is Race to Black Belt?
-
It's an incentive program for students to build and extend their vocabulary and conversational skills in the Japanese language.
In Years 4-6 :
-
Students are guided through 6-12 words in groups called 'Sets'. Students can practice through the use of digital flashcards, printable flashcards, matching games and quiz-type games.
-
They then sit for a quick exam for each set (when they are ready). They must get 90% of each set correct to pass.
In Prep to Year 3:
-
Students are guided through 10 words in groups called 'Sets'. Students can practice through the use of digital flashcards, printable flashcards, matching games and quiz-type games.
-
They then see me for a quick exam for each set (when they are ready). They must get 9/10 for each set to pass. If they don't pass, they can try again the next day or the next lesson.
How is Progress Tracked?
-
Students are given a "Race to Black Belt" Passport to keep track of their achievements.
-
Once the student has passed all of the sets for each belt level, they are awarded a badge to wear on their school uniform. This badge shows their level of Japanese proficiency in the Junior School.
-
The different levels of badges are as follows: 1st- Yellow, 2nd- Orange,
3rd- Green, 4th- Brown , 5th and highest- Black.
-
Students can sit one Set Test per week. The Black Badge gets awarded at School Assembly.
